Sitemap is the map. IndexNow is the doorbell.

The first answer engine you optimise for isn't ChatGPT or Perplexity directly. It's an index they read from. So the unglamorous first move is getting into the index — then telling it the moment anything changes.

Why Bing, of all places

ChatGPT's web search runs on Bing's index. So registering in Bing Webmaster Tools isn't an SEO afterthought — it's a direct line to the engine we most want quoting us. Google Search Console does the same job for Google's AI answers.

Pull vs push

A sitemap is a pull: the engine crawls it on its own schedule, which can be days. IndexNow is a push: the moment we deploy, we tell the engines exactly which URLs changed.

Sitemap — the map

  • Lists every page with its last-modified date
  • The engine decides when to crawl
  • Submitted once, re-read on the engine's clock

IndexNow — the doorbell

  • Pinged automatically on every deploy
  • "These URLs changed — recrawl now"
  • Minutes, not days
Merge to mainBuild + deployIndexNow pingRecrawl in minutes
The deploy pipeline rings the doorbell on its own — no manual step.

Boring plumbing. But there's no citation without first being in the index — and no fresh citation without telling the index you changed.
